Synopsis

No Major Spoilers

The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office, and Homelander is consolidating his power like never before. Billy Butcher has only months to live after abusing Temp V in Season 3 — and he's lost his position as leader of The Boys. The rest of the team is fed up with his lies.

Meanwhile, Homelander's son Ryan is caught between the influence of his biological father and the memory of Butcher. New threats emerge as Sister Sage — the smartest person in the world — and Firecracker — a right-wing Supe influencer — join The Seven. With stakes higher than ever, The Boys must find a way to work together before Homelander achieves total control over America.

Our Full Review

🎬 Eric Kripke — Bold, Unapologetic & Darker Than Ever

Eric Kripke has never been one to play it safe, and Season 4 of The Boys is proof. This season doubles down on everything that made the show famous — brutal violence, shocking twists, dark humor, and unflinching social commentary. But unlike previous seasons, this one feels heavier. Darker. More personal.

The political satire is no longer subtle — it's front and center. Some viewers may find it too on-the-nose, but others will appreciate how unapologetically the show takes sides. Love it or hate it, Season 4 is bold television.

🌟 Performances — Antony Starr Steals Every Scene (Again)

Antony Starr as Homelander continues to be one of the greatest villains in television history. In Season 4, he is more terrifying than ever — completely unchecked, with nothing holding him back. His performance alone is worth watching the season for.

Karl Urban delivers a heartbreaking performance as Billy Butcher, a dying man struggling with his humanity. His internal battle — whether to be the man Becca loved or the monster Homelander created — is fascinating to watch.

Jack Quaid as Hughie probably goes through the most emotional pain this season, particularly involving his father (played by Simon Pegg) and mother (Rosemarie DeWitt). One scene in particular is devastating — beautifully written but incredibly hard to watch.

Susan Heyward as Sister Sage is cold, calculating, and terrifyingly intelligent — she becomes the architect of most shocking events this season. Valorie Curry's Firecracker is a brilliant satire of far-right media personalities.

⚠️ Where It Falls Short

Not everything works in Season 4. The first few episodes feel slow, and some episodes feel like "random detours" rather than advancing the plot. The season feels padded — almost as if the writers are saving material for Season 5. Additionally, Frenchie's side plot comes out of nowhere and doesn't land well.

One scene where Annie shames Hughie for being sexually assaulted felt extremely out of character. And killing the original Black Noir was a mistake — his replacement adds almost nothing.

📖 Themes — Too On-The-Nose?

The Boys has always been a critique of corporate America, celebrity culture, and superhero worship. Season 4 goes all-in on political commentary — specifically targeting the MAGA movement, right-wing media, and modern American politics.

If you agree with the show's politics, you'll love it. If you don't, you'll probably hate it. Either way, you can't say it's not relevant.

✅ What Works

  • Antony Starr as Homelander — best villain on TV
  • Karl Urban's emotional performance as Butcher
  • Jack Quaid's heartbreaking family storyline
  • Sister Sage is a fantastic new villain
  • A-Train's redemption arc is well-executed
  • The Deep finally becomes threatening
  • Episode 8 finale sets up Season 5 perfectly

⚠️ What Doesn't Work

  • Pacing is uneven — first half is slow
  • Too much filler / padding
  • Political satire is no longer subtle
  • Frenchie's side plot feels forced
  • Black Noir replacement is pointless
  • Need to watch Gen V first for full context
🏆

Final Verdict

The Boys Season 4 is the most polarizing season of the series — and that's exactly what creator Eric Kripke intended. It's darker, angrier, and more political than ever before. The performances remain top-tier, and the finale sets up an incredible final season. Is it as good as Season 3? No. Is it still worth watching? Absolutely.

⭐ 8.5 / 10 — HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
